The Pokémon League Champion, frozen in ice by the Elite Four after refusing to join their plan to exterminate humanity — missing for the entire arc until Giovanni frees him for the final battle.
Red is absence made into motivation. The strongest trainer in Kanto challenged the Elite Four alone, and they froze him for it. He appears in flashbacks and in the desperate hope that drives Yellow forward, but he doesn't set foot on-screen until the very end. Before his disappearance, Red confronted Bruno on Mt. Moon. Agatha used mind-control to turn the fight against him, and Lorelei encased him in ice when he refused to join their crusade. His Pikachu, Pika, escaped and found its way to Professor Oak's lab — battered and alone — which set the entire arc in motion. Giovanni, of all people, eventually locates and frees Red from the ice. Red arrives at Cerise Island just in time to reunite with Blue and Green, and together the three original Pokédex holders channel their starters' energy through Yellow's String Shot to power Pika's Megavolt — the attack that brings down Lance. He never learns that Yellow is a girl during this arc. He never learns she's the child he saved in Viridian Forest years ago.
