Wallace is what Ruby could become if Ruby ever stopped lying to himself. He is both Sootopolis City's Gym Leader and a master Pokémon Coordinator — proof that battle prowess and artistic beauty aren't opposites but complements. This makes him the single most important mentor figure in Ruby's life, because Wallace is the living answer to Ruby's false choice. He takes Ruby under his wing after recognizing the boy's extraordinary talent. He doesn't just teach Ruby Contest technique — he teaches him that beauty without strength is shallow, and strength without beauty is brutality. Wallace is patient, perceptive, and genuinely kind, though he can be cutting when someone wastes their potential. His relationship with Winona, the Fortree Gym Leader, is complicated — they have a romantic history that neither of them handles gracefully. His relationship with Steven Stone is one of deep mutual respect and trust; they coordinate the Gym Leaders' response to the Groudon/Kyogre crisis together. During the crisis, Wallace organizes the Hoenn Gym Leaders into teams to combat the catastrophic weather. He fights directly against Team Aqua and Team Magma, easily subduing their forces. He later becomes Champion of Hoenn after Steven's death. Uses Water-type Pokémon including Milotic, his signature partner.
