Hoenn's Champion, a steel-and-stone collector who fights with quiet precision — died holding back the tide long enough for children to save the world.
Steven Stone is the son of Devon Corporation president Mr. Stone, but he earned the Championship through his own power. He collects rare stones with the same intensity other people collect badges — it's not a hobby, it's a compulsion. He understands the earth the way musicians understand sound. In the Ruby & Sapphire arc, Steven serves as the adult who actually understands how bad things are getting. While the Gym Leaders argue about whether Team Aqua or Team Magma is the 'good' team, Steven sees the truth: both are catastrophically wrong, and the super-ancient Pokémon they're awakening will destroy Hoenn regardless of which side wins. Steven's role in the crisis climax is to control the three Legendary Golems — Regirock, Regice, and Registeel — to contain the damage from the Groudon/Kyogre battle. The strain of channeling three Legendaries simultaneously kills him. He dies from exhaustion, having bought enough time for Ruby, Sapphire, and Norman to reach Sootopolis with Rayquaza. His death is quiet and offscreen — Wallace finds him collapsed, already gone. It's one of the most shocking moments in the manga because Steven never panicked, never asked for help, never stopped. He just did what needed to be done until his body gave out. Revived later by Celebi's time-travel. Wallace inherits the Championship in his absence. Uses Steel-type Pokémon, with Metagross as his ace.
Young man with silver-blue hair and steel-grey eyes, wearing a dark suit with a purple cravat. Carries himself with the composed assurance of inherited wealth refined by genuine ability. His hands are always slightly dusty from handling rare stones. Metagross is usually nearby — floating, scanning, waiting.
