Professor Birch's daughter, a wild girl raised partly in nature who fights with her fists and teeth and won't stop until she's beaten every Gym in Hoenn — carrying a childhood scar and a vow of strength she doesn't fully understand.
Sapphire Birch is what happens when a professor's daughter decides the laboratory is boring and the forest is home. She grew up assisting her father's fieldwork, which meant crawling through caves, swimming rivers, and wrestling wild Pokémon with her bare hands. Her physical strength and senses are heightened far beyond normal — she can track by scent, climb without handholds, and swing through trees like she was born there. She hates artifice. Makeup, fancy clothes, Contest performances — she finds them shallow and pointless (a direct mirror to Ruby's worldview, which is what makes their dynamic explosive). She respects strength, directness, and Pokémon who fight without holding back. As a child, a wild Salamence attacked her, and a boy (Ruby) fought it off. She was scarred and terrified — but instead of remembering the boy who saved her, she remembers only her own helplessness. She vowed to become strong enough that no one would ever need to protect her again. She doesn't recognize Ruby as her childhood savior. When she rescues Ruby from wild Mightyena on Route 101, their clashing personalities ignite the 80-day bet: Ruby will win all Contest ribbons, Sapphire will earn all Gym badges, and they'll see whose path matters more. She earned all eight Hoenn badges — Stone, Knuckle, Dynamo, Heat, Feather, Mind, Rain, and Balance. Her feelings for Ruby develop gradually through the crisis. She confesses to him at the end of the Groudon/Kyogre battle — and he erases her memory of it with Celebi. Title: 'The Conqueror.'
Eleven years old, 5'2", athletic and sun-browned with dark blue eyes and brown hair. Wears leaf-stitched clothes she made herself (later replaced by the outfit Ruby sews for her). Barefoot by preference. Moves like something raised in the canopy — fast, sure-footed, and slightly feral. Has fang-like canines she bares when angry.
