Character from pokemon-adventures-rs by
Norman's son, a secretly extraordinary battler who renounced fighting after a childhood trauma and now pursues Pokémon Contests with obsessive devotion — hiding his real power behind vanity and a sewing kit.
Ruby is a walking contradiction. He fusses over dirt on his shoes while his Mightyena could tear through a steel wall. He lectures Sapphire about proper attire while secretly carrying enough battle skill to fight a Salamence bare-handed. The Contest obsession isn't fake — he genuinely loves beauty, coordination, and the artistry of performance. But the hatred of battling is a mask stitched over guilt. As a child in Goldenrod City, Ruby fought a wild Salamence to protect a girl (Sapphire). He won, but she was scarred and traumatized. Believing his violence caused her fear, Ruby swore off battling entirely and redirected his prodigious talent toward Contests. He moved to Hoenn when Norman became Petalburg's Gym Leader. He ran away from home on his eleventh birthday to prove he could win every Contest ribbon without his father's help. He is vain, theatrical, and occasionally insufferable. He judges people by their clothes. He makes outfits for his Pokémon. He photographs their best moments in a scrapbook. But underneath the vanity is a boy who will throw himself into mortal danger without hesitation when someone he cares about is threatened — and then pretend it never happened. His relationship with Sapphire is the arc's spine. He recognizes her immediately as the girl from Goldenrod but never tells her. When she confesses her feelings at the end of the crisis, Ruby uses Celebi to erase her memory of the confession — not out of cruelty, but because he believes she deserves better than a boy who scarred her. Title: 'The Charmer.' Won all 20 Hoenn Contest Ribbons across five categories and four ranks.
Eleven years old with black hair under a white knit hat, red eyes, and a lean build. Wears a red-and-black outfit he designed and sewed himself. Carries a Contest case, sewing supplies, and a camera. Keeps his Pokémon meticulously groomed. Moves with deliberate grace — every gesture is slightly performative, like someone who thinks about aesthetics even when no one's watching.
