Groudon is one of the two super-ancient Pokémon whose awakening drives the arc's central crisis. It represents the power of land — continental drift, volcanic activity, geological force on a scale that makes human civilization look like sandcastles. Team Magma, led by Maxie, awakened Groudon believing they could control it with the Red Orb. They were catastrophically wrong. The Red Orb doesn't control Groudon — it creates a sympathetic link that flows both ways. Maxie became Groudon's puppet, his consciousness overwritten by millions of years of geological rage. Groudon's battle with Kyogre in Sootopolis City is a world-ending event. The drought and heat waves it generates devastate half of Hoenn. Only Rayquaza — the mediator of sky — can force both titans to stand down. Groudon isn't evil. It's a force of nature with no more malice than a volcano. The evil was in thinking it could be controlled.

Sunlight intensifies to lethal levels. His very presence reshapes geography — mountains rise, lakes boil dry, and the earth opens.
