The tournament brackets create dramatic matchups: Green loses to Dr. O (Oak) in the semifinals, leading to her emotional confession about her kidnapping and Oak's gift of the third Pokédex. Red and Blue meet in the finals, where Red's Venusaur narrowly defeats Blue's Charizard in a battle that cements their rivalry as Kanto's defining trainer relationship.
