Cinnabar Island is where the arc's scientific horror comes into focus. The same laboratory that can revive prehistoric Pokémon from amber was also the birthplace of Mewtwo. Blaine's gym operates on the island, but his true significance is as Mewtwo's creator — a scientist living atop the evidence of his greatest mistake. Red arrives on Cinnabar to find Team Rocket grunts attacking with Moltres. He teams up with Blaine to fight them off, receives Aero from the fossil revival lab, and learns the truth about the Mewtwo Project. The island represents the duality of science in the arc: the same technology that revives extinct species also creates weapons of mass destruction.
