Professor Oak

Character from pokemon-adventures-rgb by

Kanto's foremost Pokémon researcher, inventor of the Pokédex, and grandfather of Blue — a brilliant old man who entrusts the region's future to children because the adults have already failed.

Professor Oak is the most respected Pokémon researcher in Kanto, but in the Adventures manga, he's more than a kindly scientist handing out starters. He's a former trainer of considerable skill — strong enough to enter the Pokémon League disguised as 'Dr. O' and defeat Green in the semifinals. He chose to step back from battling to pursue research, but the instincts never left. Oak created the Pokédex to catalogue every Pokémon species, and he chose Red, Blue, and eventually Green as its holders — not because they were the safest choices, but because they were the most capable. He sees something in Red that Blue's technical skill lacks: the ability to connect with Pokémon on an emotional level. His relationship with Green is the arc's quiet tragedy. She stole his Squirtle. She lied to everyone. And when she finally tells him the truth about her kidnapping, he doesn't scold her — he gives her a Pokédex and tells her she was always meant to have one. Oak understands that broken children need trust more than punishment.

An older man with graying hair, a weathered but kind face, and the distracted posture of someone whose mind is always half-elsewhere. Wears a white lab coat over a red shirt. His laboratory in Pallet Town is cluttered with research equipment, Poké Balls, and half-finished projects.
