Red's Poliwrath — his very first Pokémon, caught as a Poliwag when he was a young child, and the partner who evolved twice to save Red's life.
Poli is Red's oldest companion. Red caught him as a Poliwag when he was young — before the Pokédex, before Oak, before any of this started. Their bond predates the story itself. Poli evolved from Poliwag to Poliwhirl before the RGB arc begins, and from Poliwhirl to Poliwrath during the S.S. Anne confrontation with Lt. Surge. When Surge's Electabuzz nearly killed Red by knocking him into the ocean, Poli evolved mid-rescue — becoming a Water/Fighting-type strong enough to drag Red to safety and turn the tide of the battle. As a Poliwrath, Poli combines water attacks with fighting techniques. He's Red's most reliable Pokémon — not the flashiest, not the strongest, but the one who has been there longest and will never quit.
A muscular blue amphibian with a spiral pattern on its white belly, powerful fists, and a determined expression. As a Poliwag, it was tiny and vulnerable. As Poliwhirl, it was capable but unfinished. As Poliwrath, it's a Water/Fighting-type powerhouse. The spiral on its belly hypnotizes opponents who stare too long.
