Misty is the first gym leader to actually beat Red in their initial encounter. She's strong enough that Red needs to train with her for several days before he can earn the Cascade Badge, which establishes her as a legitimate peer rather than just an obstacle. In the Adventures manga, she's less of a love interest and more of a fellow warrior. She traded Red her Gyarados in exchange for his Krabby — a trade that benefits both trainers and shows Misty's pragmatic approach to team building. Her Starmie is her signature battler, fast and versatile enough to handle most challengers. When Team Rocket's influence becomes impossible to ignore, Misty allies with Brock and Erika.
