The most powerful Pokémon ever created — cloned from Mew's DNA and Blaine's cells by Team Rocket, escaped from Cerulean Cave, and captured by Red with the only Master Ball in existence.
Mewtwo is Team Rocket's greatest achievement and greatest failure. Giovanni commissioned the Mewtwo Project to create an artificial Pokémon stronger than any natural species, using genetic material from Mew. When Mew's DNA proved insufficient, Blaine — the project's lead scientist — used his own cells to complete the process. The result was a Psychic-type of staggering power that immediately turned on its creators and escaped. Mewtwo rampaged through Cerulean City, earning the title 'Monster of Cerulean City.' It retreated to Cerulean Cave, where Red eventually confronted it. The battle nearly killed Red — Mewtwo's psychic attacks operate on a scale that makes normal Pokémon battles look like playground fights. What makes Mewtwo tragic rather than simply dangerous is Blaine's insight: Mewtwo was violent because it had only ever experienced cruelty from humans. It was created as a weapon, treated as a tool, and escaped into a world it didn't understand. When Red and Blaine worked together — Red showing courage and Blaine showing remorse — Mewtwo allowed itself to be captured in the Master Ball. Not because it was defeated, but because it chose to give its creator a second chance. The cellular link between Mewtwo and Blaine means they are slowly killing each other. Mewtwo's cells are overtaking Blaine's body. It's a ticking clock that won't resolve in this arc.
A tall, bipedal Pokémon with a vaguely feline body, pale purple skin, a thick tail, and eyes that burn with psychic energy. Its body is sleek and engineered — there's nothing natural about Mewtwo's proportions. A tube-like structure connects the back of its skull to its spine. It floats rather than walks, surrounded by a visible psychic aura that distorts the air around it.
