Brock is the first real test Red faces, and unlike the anime version, this Brock isn't played for comedy. He's a competent gym leader who has grown bored because no challenger can even get past his preliminaries — Blue describes him as someone waiting for a real fight. When Red finally earns Pika's trust and defeats Brock's Onix, it marks the first genuine accomplishment of Red's journey. Outside the gym, Brock works as a security guard at the Pewter Museum of Science, which puts him directly in Team Rocket's crosshairs when they target the museum's fossils. He's brave enough to stand his ground and principled enough to ally with Misty and Erika against the Rocket-aligned gym leaders when the lines are drawn. Brock represents the honorable side of Kanto's gym system — the leaders who take their responsibility seriously and refuse to be corrupted.
