The nightmare Pokemon -- a Mythical creature controlled by Sird whose beam turned five Pokedex holders to stone, changing the course of the entire manga.

Darkrai is not a villain. It is a weapon -- controlled by Sird through means that are never fully explained in this arc. When Sird attempted to capture Deoxys at the arc's climax, she fired a beam from a Poke Ball that was later revealed to be Darkrai's power. The beam was meant for Deoxys. The five Pokedex holders -- Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Silver -- intercepted it. They were turned to stone, creating the cliffhanger that drives the entire Emerald arc. Sird later lost control of Darkrai, releasing it into the Distortion World during the Diamond and Pearl arc. The implication is that Darkrai was always too powerful for any human to truly contain.

Appearance

A shadowy, wraith-like Pokemon with a flowing white plume resembling hair, a single visible cyan eye, and a body that seems to dissolve into darkness at its edges. Its presence distorts light and induces nightmares in nearby sleepers.
