Wakaba's research was the first rigorous scientific framework for the Metaverse — the document that proved it was real, mappable, and manipulable. Shido had her murdered because the research, in the wrong hands, would expose everything: the Metaverse, the Palaces, and the government's unauthorized use of cognitive science for political control. Futaba carries the weight of her mother's work and eventually reads it fully — the content being her mother's final message, which absolves her of responsibility for the death Wakaba's enemies staged as a suicide. The research is also the foundation of Maruki's work in Royal.
