The Black Mask is Akechi's second face in the Metaverse — the one the public never sees because Shido keeps it classified. In Robin Hood's costume, he is a hero. In the Black Mask, he kills Shadows in ways that cause real-world targets to suffer psychotic breaks or die. The two costumes encode the split Akechi lives: the persona he performs and the person he agreed to become. When the Phantom Thieves encounter the Black Mask version of Akechi, they are meeting the part of him that has given up entirely. In Royal's third semester, Akechi chooses which costume he inhabits — and what that means.
