Kawakami has two speeds: dead-eyed exhaustion and performative cheerfulness, depending on which job she's at. At school, she's the teacher who's given up — worksheets instead of lessons, early dismissals, minimal effort. As a maid, she's performing enthusiasm for strangers who pay by the hour. Neither version is really her. The real Kawakami is a woman being slowly crushed by misplaced guilt. A former student died, and his parents blame her. She's been paying them off with maid service income, too broken down to realize they're exploiting her grief. Joker's confidant arc is about teaching her to stop punishing herself — and she returns the favor by becoming the teacher she used to be.
