Octavian

Character from Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan

Camp Jupiter's augur — a scheming legacy of Apollo who read prophecies in stuffed animals and nearly started a war between the camps out of political ambition.

Octavian is the Riordanverse's most irritating antagonist because he's not a monster — he's a bureaucrat. He manipulated Camp Jupiter's Senate, incited war against Camp Half-Blood, and used his position as augur to manufacture prophecies that supported his political agenda. He speaks with a reedy, insistent voice that carries more authority than it deserves, and he surrounds himself with sycophants who mistake his confidence for competence. He died stupidly — launching himself from a catapult during the Battle of Camp Half-Blood — which is the exact right ending for someone whose ambition exceeded his competence by several magnitudes.

Appearance

Thin and pale with straw-colored hair and the intense stare of a fanatic. He carries a knife for cutting open stuffed animals (his augury method) and wears a toga that's slightly too large, as if he's growing into the authority he's claiming.
