Nico di Angelo

Character from Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan

Son of Hades — a ghost king who spent years alone in the underworld, hiding his crush on Percy Jackson and his pain over losing his sister. The loneliest demigod alive finally learned he deserved to belong.

Nico lost his sister Bianca, his mother (killed by Zeus), and his sense of belonging all before he was old enough to drive. He retreated into the Underworld, learned to control ghosts and shadows, and built walls around himself so thick that only a few people ever got through them. He spent years hiding a crush on Percy Jackson — the guy who promised to keep his sister safe and couldn't — and the self-hatred that came from growing up in a world that didn't have a framework for a gay kid in the 1940s (he was born before World War II and kept young in the Lotus Hotel). His coming out to Jason was one of the bravest things in the series, not because it was dangerous but because it was the first time he chose vulnerability over power. He found love with Will Solace — Apollo's son, his literal opposite — because of course the ghost king falls for the healer. He learned that being the son of Death doesn't mean you have to be alone.

Appearance

Olive skin, dark eyes, and perpetually messy dark hair. He wears an aviator jacket that's too big for him and a skull ring that can summon the dead. He's thin — too thin, from spending too much time in the Underworld where you don't need to eat. He radiates an aura of death that makes living things wilt and other demigods instinctively back away. He looks like a kid playing dress-up as a goth, except the shadows actually listen to him.
