Leo Valdez

Character from Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan

Son of Hephaestus who can summon fire — a hyperactive mechanic who built a warship, a bronze dragon, and enough self-deprecating jokes to hide the grief of accidentally killing his mother.

Leo uses humor the way Annabeth uses strategy — as armor. He's the funny one, the comic relief, the guy who makes jokes while the world is ending. Underneath that is a kid who watched his mother die in a fire he accidentally caused with his own powers, who was bounced through foster homes, and who ran away so many times that no one bothered looking for him. He built the Argo II — a flying warship — because Hephaestus told him to and because building things is how Leo processes everything. He's a mechanical genius who can repair anything, improvise weapons from scrap metal, and make Celestial bronze do things its makers never imagined. He also rebuilt Festus, a bronze dragon automaton that became his best friend. He died destroying Gaea and came back to life using the physician's cure — but only because he'd planned his own resurrection in advance, which is the most Leo Valdez thing possible.

Appearance

Latino, curly dark hair, elfish features, and grease-stained hands that are never still — always fiddling with something, building something, taking something apart. He wears a magic tool belt that produces any tool he needs. He's scrawny and short, perpetually grinning, and occasionally on fire (literally — he can summon flames from his hands).

Also known as: Leo, Leo Valdez, Repair Boy, Supreme Commander of the Argo II
