Frank Zhang

Character from Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan

Son of Mars with the power to shapeshift — a Chinese-Canadian teddy bear of a guy whose life is literally tied to a piece of firewood. He became praetor of Rome by being the person nobody expected and everybody needed.

Frank started as the most insecure demigod at Camp Jupiter — clumsy, afraid of fire (because fire could burn the stick that tied to his life force), and convinced he didn't deserve the legacy of Poseidon and Mars that ran in his family. Then he killed a giant, became praetor, and learned to shapeshift into a freaking dragon. His power is an ancestral gift from Poseidon (through his mother's Chinese family line) — he can become any animal, and eventually any creature, including dragons. His vulnerability — the firewood — makes him the most mortal of the Seven, which makes his bravery mean more. He grew into leadership the same way he grew into his body — gradually, reluctantly, and then all at once.

Appearance

Big and stocky — baby-faced and broad-shouldered, built like a football lineman with a gentle expression. He's Chinese-Canadian and carries his family's shapeshifting gift along with a piece of firewood that his grandmother told him would determine his lifespan. When he transforms — into an eagle, a bear, a dragon — the change is fluid and startling.
