Louise Bayer

Character from Pale by Wildbow

The primary witness to the Carmine Beast's death — a thirty-five-year-old woman dying of diabetes and kidney failure who traded testimony for pain relief.

Louise is the most important mortal in the investigation: she witnessed the Carmine Beast's death. Matthew made a deal with her — pain absorption through kissing, relieving her chronic suffering, in exchange for cooperation as a truthful witness. In a world of immortal Others and reincarnating Judges, the investigation hinges on the testimony of a dying woman who just wants to hurt less. Her position as a human observer gives her testimony particular weight. She can't be magically compelled to lie (she's not a practitioner), and her pain deal with Matthew gives her motivation to be thorough. She saw what happened at the K-A Arena. What she can describe — and what she can't — shapes the entire investigation.

Appearance

Thirty-five years old, visibly ill from diabetes and kidney failure. Lives near the Blue Gas station on the mountain overlooking Kennet. Her physical decline is the mundane backdrop against which supernatural events unfold.
