John Stiles is a mosaic. Twenty soldiers — sixteen from conventional wars, three from fires, one from a darkness he doesn't discuss — compressed into a single entity that thinks tactically, speaks carefully, and executes problem Others near Kennet with the efficiency of a military operation. He never sleeps. He cannot be killed while an ongoing war exists somewhere in the world, which in practice means he cannot be killed. He killed his close companion Yalda — the 'black soldier,' the Sick Dog — before the story begins. The Judges liked him for the vacant Carmine role, which would have made him one of the four supernatural arbiters of the Otherverse. Miss confirmed he was hunting far from Kennet on the night of the murder, clearing him as a suspect. John dies during the story. He is remembered fondly by the council, which for a being made of war is perhaps the most peaceful thing that could happen to him.
Short hair, deep-set shadowed eyes, prominent cheekbones, square chin. Wears two dog tags and a ring. His expression is perpetually wounded — not in pain, but carrying it. Built like a soldier who has been built from soldiers. Sixteen war, three flame, one black.
