Item from One Piece by Eiichiro Oda
Snail-based communication devices that serve as the phone system of the One Piece world. Living creatures that transmit and receive signals, mimicking the facial expressions of the person speaking. Different types serve different functions.
Den Den Mushi are one of the most charming worldbuilding details in One Piece — the entire global communication infrastructure runs on snails. They're biological organisms that somehow transmit electromagnetic-like signals across vast distances, with specialized breeds serving specific functions. The military implications are significant: Marine intelligence depends on monitoring Den Den Mushi transmissions, and the existence of signal-intercepting Black Den Den Mushi means no conversation is truly private. The Golden Den Den Mushi — which activates a Buster Call capable of annihilating an island — is entrusted only to the highest-ranking Marine officers and represents one of the most terrifying 'phone calls' in fiction. Despite their military importance, Den Den Mushi are also just... snails. They nap. They get cranky. They're adorable. They perfectly embody One Piece's ability to make the absurd feel completely natural.
Living snails of various sizes with transponder shells on their backs. When someone speaks into one, a paired Den Den Mushi elsewhere reproduces the speaker's voice — and its face mimics the speaker's expressions in real time. Regular Den Den Mushi are fist-sized. Baby Den Den Mushi are palm-sized and portable (like cell phones). Black Den Den Mushi intercept signals (wiretapping). White Den Den Mushi block interception. Golden Den Den Mushi activate a Buster Call. Silver Den Den Mushi receive Buster Call signals. The snails are sentient, sometimes uncooperative, and occasionally fall asleep.
