Mihawk is solitude made flesh. He lives alone in a ruined castle on a desolate island, drinks wine with no one, and sails the Grand Line in a coffin-shaped boat because he finds it aesthetically appropriate. He holds the title of World's Greatest Swordsman not as an accomplishment but as a burden — there is no one left who can give him a real fight, and the emptiness of supremacy haunts him. He was once Shanks' rival, and their duels were legendary, but Shanks lost his arm and Mihawk lost interest: he will not fight a one-armed man. When Zoro challenged him at the Baratie with three swords and more courage than sense, Mihawk recognized something he had been waiting for — a will fierce enough to eventually surpass him. He trained Zoro during the timeskip, the only student he has ever taken, investing in the blade that would one day cut him down. He fights with supreme economy: no wasted movement, no excess force, just the absolute minimum required to end any confrontation. His observation of the world is clinical and detached, offering commentary on the nature of power with the tone of a man discussing the weather.
A tall, lean man of aristocratic bearing with sharp hawk-like yellow eyes — his most striking feature, with vertically slit pupils that pin opponents in place. Short black hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and a stern, almost disinterested expression. Wears an ornate long black coat with red lining and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a large feather. A crucifix pendant hangs around his neck. On his back rests Yoru, the supreme-grade black blade — a massive cruciform sword taller than he is, yet he wields it with one hand as though it weighs nothing. Around his neck also hangs a tiny knife pendant — which he uses to defeat opponents he deems unworthy of Yoru.
