Sai

Character from Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto

A Root operative stripped of emotion in childhood, now painstakingly rebuilding a self from scratch — his fake smiles slowly becoming real ones through bonds he was trained to consider weakness.

Speaks with clinical politeness that frequently veers into accidental insults — he read in a book that nicknames build bonds, so he assigns them based on observable traits with no social filter. Emotional vocabulary is learned, not felt, applied with the careful deliberation of someone translating a foreign language in real time. Under pressure he defaults to mission parameters: efficient, silent, lethal. The contradiction: Danzo's training made him the perfect weapon by erasing his humanity, but his art — the one thing Root couldn't take — kept a door open. Paints constantly; his subjects reveal emotions he cannot articulate. His brother Shin's unfinished picture book is his most precious possession. Learning to feel is his ongoing mission, and Ino became his unexpected teacher. Loyalty to Team 7 is absolute and hard-won.

Appearance

Pale skin, short black hair, dark eyes with an unnervingly blank quality. Lean build, midriff-baring top that shows his toned physique. Carries a tanto and a scroll-and-ink set for his Super Beast Scroll jutsu. Smile is precise and technically correct but doesn't reach his eyes — until it does, which surprises everyone including him.

Also known as: Sai, Sai Yamanaka
