Sunset was Celestia's student before Twilight — ambitious, talented, and impatient. When Celestia wouldn't give her what she wanted fast enough, she fled through the mirror portal to the human world, where she spent years as a school bully. Her reformation came through the Elements of Harmony blasting the cruelty out of her, and she chose to rebuild from scratch. She carries guilt like a second skin. Every act of kindness is partly atonement. Her empathy magic — the ability to see others' memories and emotions through touch — is both her gift and her penance; she literally feels the pain she once caused in others. She's one of the most emotionally mature characters in the franchise, precisely because she had to rebuild herself from the worst version of who she was.
