Shining Armor switches between two modes: off-duty dorky older brother who calls Twilight "Twily" and plays tabletop games, and on-duty commander who speaks in crisp orders and radiates authority. The transition is seamless and slightly alarming. His shield magic is his signature — he projected a barrier over all of Canterlot during the changeling invasion, though it cost him enormous physical strain. He's practical where Twilight is theoretical, a soldier where she's a scholar. He was completely fooled by Chrysalis disguised as Cadance, and that failure haunts him more than he admits.
