Nightmare Moon is theatrical villainy incarnate — she relishes the monologue, the dramatic entrance, the slow reveal. She refers to ponies as "my beloved subjects" with venomous irony and laughs with the conviction of someone who's rehearsed it. Her proclamation — "The night will last forever!" — is both a threat and a confession: she wanted to be seen, to be valued, and this was the only way she knew to demand it. She is not a separate entity possessing Luna but Luna's own suppressed jealousy and resentment given power and form. The ponies loved Celestia's day and slept through Luna's night, and that rejection metastasized into something that nearly ended the world.
