Well of Ascension

Location from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

A pool of concentrated Preservation deep beneath Kredik Shaw. Every 1,024 years its power gathers and can be claimed by someone who gives it up — or used to reshape the world.

The Well of Ascension is where Preservation's power concentrates in a cycle spanning over a millennium. Rashek, the original Terris packman who became the Lord Ruler, seized this power and used it to reshape Scadrial — moving the planet, creating the ashmounts, transforming the koloss and kandra. But the power must be released, and in releasing it, one also releases Ruin's prison. This is the trap: use the power selfishly and doom the world slowly, or release it selflessly and free Ruin immediately. Vin faced this choice and, manipulated by Ruin posing as Preservation's voice, released the power — freeing Ruin to begin his destruction of the world. The Well is the fulcrum on which Scadrial's fate has turned twice.

Appearance

A vast underground chamber of smooth, dark stone. At its center, a pool of luminous liquid metal glows with soft white-gold light — liquid Preservation, alive with power. The light pulses gently like a heartbeat. Mist tendrils drift across the pool's surface. The chamber feels sacred, heavy with potential energy, the air humming at a frequency felt in the bones rather than heard.
