Location from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
The omnipresent atmospheric phenomenon of Era 1 Scadrial — Preservation's body made manifest as fog that blankets the world every night. Can Snap latent Allomancers and was feared by the skaa.
The mists are Preservation's body dispersed across the atmosphere — as fundamental to Era 1 Scadrial as the ashfall from the ashmounts. Every night they descend, and the skaa hide indoors, terrified of the Mistwraiths and the unknown. The nobility and Allomancers move through them freely; Mistborn in particular feel an affinity with the mists, which part around them like welcoming arms. The mists can Snap latent Allomancers — triggering their powers through a moment of crisis. Near the end of Era 1, as the balance between Preservation and Ruin destabilized, the mists began appearing during the day and killing people, sowing panic. Vin ultimately drew upon the mists — Preservation's power — to fuel her final confrontation with Ruin. After the Catacendre, the mists became occasional rather than nightly, a gentle echo of their former omnipresence.
Dense white fog that rolls in at nightfall, filling streets and open spaces with swirling tendrils of moisture. The mists move with an almost sentient quality — curling around buildings, parting around Allomancers, and occasionally coalescing into denser formations. In moonlight they glow faintly silver. Near the end of Era 1, the mists began appearing during the day and killing people — Ruin's corruption of Preservation's power.
