Hemalurgic Spikes

Item from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

Metal spikes that steal Allomantic or Feruchemical abilities when driven through one person and into another. The dark art of Hemalurgy, used to create Steel Inquisitors, koloss, and kandra Blessings.

Hemalurgy is the third Metallic Art and the most terrible — the art of Ruin, based on destruction. A Hemalurgic spike is created by killing a person with a metal spike at a specific bind point, which rips away a portion of their Spiritual essence — their Allomantic or Feruchemical ability. The spike is then driven into a recipient at another bind point, grafting the stolen power onto them. Every spike creates a crack in the recipient's Spiritual self through which Ruin can exert influence. Steel Inquisitors bear dozens of spikes, granting them immense stolen powers but making them vulnerable to Ruin's control. Koloss are created by driving four crude spikes into a human, transforming them into mindless killing machines. Even the kandra Blessings are a gentler form of Hemalurgy.

Appearance

Large metal spikes of various metals, each stained dark with old blood. Steel Inquisitor spikes are driven through the eyes and body at specific bind points. Koloss spikes are cruder, driven through the torso. The spikes radiate wrongness — even non-Allomancers sense something deeply unsettling about them. Each spike trails a faint sense of Ruin's influence.
