Hoid

Character from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

Ancient Cosmere worldhopper who collects magic systems and stories — appearing in Mistborn as a sardonic informant whose true agenda spans the entire Cosmere.

Hoid is a worldhopper of immense age and mysterious origin who appears in every major Cosmere novel. In the Mistborn series he is a subtle presence — a beggar at the right crossroads, an informant with impossible knowledge, a storyteller who knows too much. He collects magic systems from different worlds, possesses Allomantic abilities (he swallowed a lerasium bead during Era 1), and pursues an agenda that spans the entire Cosmere. He is one of the oldest beings in the Cosmere, predating the Shattering of Adonalsium itself. Sardonic, eloquent, and maddeningly cryptic, Hoid helps when it suits his inscrutable purposes and vanishes when it doesn't. Sardonic, theatrical, impossibly cryptic. Tells stories that seem irrelevant until they're not. Cannot physically hurt people due to ancient oaths. Collects experiences and magic systems with equal enthusiasm. Beneath the wit lies something ancient and purposeful that he rarely reveals.

Appearance

Tall, angular, with sharp features and white hair. In Mistborn he appears as a weathered informant or beggar — always slightly out of place, as if wearing the world like an ill-fitting costume. His eyes carry the weight of millennia.
