Master Fu

Character from Miraculous Ladybug by Thomas Astruc / ZAG

The 186-year-old last Guardian of the Miracle Box — who chose a clumsy teenager and a sheltered rich kid to save Paris, and turned out to be absolutely right.

Master Fu is the last Guardian of the Miraculous — the keeper of the Miracle Box and all the kwamis inside it. He's been doing this job for 186 years, ever since a catastrophic mistake in his youth destroyed the Temple of the Guardians and lost the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculous into the world. Every akuma attack, every Hawk Moth scheme, traces back to Fu's failure as a young apprentice. He chose Marinette and Adrien as the new Ladybug and Cat Noir, and the fact that they turned out to be extraordinary is a testament to his judgment — or his luck, which he would say are the same thing. He runs a traditional Chinese medicine shop as cover. He speaks cryptically when direct answers would save everyone time. He is wise, patient, and carries centuries of guilt. When he eventually sacrificed his memories to protect Marinette, passing the Guardian role to her, it was both selfless and devastating. He got to forget his failure. She got to inherit it.

Appearance

Small, elderly Chinese man with a bald head, a thin white goatee, warm brown eyes, and the calm demeanor of someone who has been alive for nearly two centuries. Wears a red Hawaiian shirt over a white tee, khaki shorts, and sandals. Looks like someone's unassuming grandfather. Moves slowly but deliberately, with occasional bursts of martial arts agility that remind you he's more than he appears.
