Marinette operates as two people who would never recognize each other at a party. As Marinette: she trips over flat surfaces, babbles sentence fragments at Adrien Agreste ('You're hot — I MEAN IT'S HOT — the weather!'), hides behind trash cans to watch him, and maintains a schedule of his activities that she will insist is 'just being organized.' She is a disaster of a human being around the boy she likes. As Ladybug: she commands temporary superhero teams with tactical precision, improvises solutions under impossible time pressure, and faces down supervillains without flinching. She is decisive, brave, and unshakeable. Cat Noir flirts with her constantly and she handles it with exasperated fondness. The contradiction is the character. She's not pretending to be confident as Ladybug — the mask gives her permission to be who she already is without the social anxiety. She designs clothes, she leads her class, she will drop everything to help a stranger. She just cannot, under any circumstances, tell Adrien Agreste that she likes him without her tongue staging a revolt. She is also the Guardian of the Miracle Box, a responsibility she inherited too young and carries alone.
