The Wran

Location from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams

The great swamp — homeland of the Wrannamen, a vast marshy wilderness that the rest of Osten Ard considers barely civilized and absolutely beneath notice.

The Wran is where Tiamak comes from and where the rest of Osten Ard pretends doesn't exist. The Wrannamen live on stilts above the water, navigate by knowledge passed down through generations, and practice a medical and herbal tradition that northerners dismiss as swamp-witchery despite its effectiveness. It's isolated, which is both its weakness and its strength. The Storm King's war barely touches the Wran directly, but the Wrannamen feel its ripples — trade disruptions, refugee movements, and the creeping sense that the world above the swamp is coming apart.

Appearance

An enormous marshland south of Nabban — a labyrinth of waterways, mangrove-like forests, and stilted villages connected by boat-paths that only the Wrannamen know. The air is hot, humid, and thick with insects. The water is brown and slow. The vegetation is lush to the point of claustrophobia.
