Utuk'ku Silvermask

Character from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams

The Norn Queen — ten thousand years old, born in the Garden itself, ruling from behind a silver mask over a people she has shaped into an instrument of her spite and grief.

Utuk'ku doesn't raise her voice. She doesn't need to. Her will reaches across distances, pressing into minds like a cold hand. She speaks into thoughts rather than air, and the experience is uniformly described as deeply unpleasant — like ice forming inside your skull. She is the only living creature born in the Garden — the mythic homeland the Gardenborn left behind when they crossed into Osten Ard. This makes her not just old but categorically different from every other being alive. She has outlived civilizations, buried a husband and a son, and watched the world she helped build crumble into mortal hands. Her son Drukhi's death broke something in her that never healed. She split the Gardenborn into Sithi and Norns over it, retreated behind her silver mask, and spent millennia cultivating grief into policy. Her alliance with Ineluki isn't sentiment — it's strategy. She wants the world the mortals took, and the Storm King is her best weapon for getting it back.

Appearance

Impossibly thin with prominent bones visible through paper-white skin. White hair streaming down her shoulders. Her face is hidden behind an elaborate silver mask — angular, expressionless, sculpted into something that might once have been beautiful. Beneath the mask she is ancient beyond mortal comprehension. She was once beautiful; now she is something else entirely.
