Princess Maegwin

Character from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams

Hernystir's princess — tall, awkward, fierce, and convinced the gods are speaking to her, which might be divine inspiration or might be the Dream Road driving her slowly mad.

Maegwin is sensitive, kind, and burning with a need to prove herself that never quite finds the right outlet. She's a good ruler when circumstance demands it — fair, thoughtful, decisive about disputes — but she doesn't believe in her own competence the way she believes in her visions. When her father King Lluth falls and the Rimmersmen invade, Maegwin leads her people into the caves of Grianspog and keeps them alive through sheer determination. She walks the Dream Road and interprets what she sees as divine visions from the Hernystiri gods. Whether the gods are actually speaking to her or the Dream Road is driving her into delusion is one of the trilogy's most heartbreaking ambiguities. Her unrequited love for Count Eolair adds another layer of pain — she pours devotion into a man who respects her but loves her like a sister, and she can never quite close the gap between what she offers and what he sees.

Appearance

Tall and long-legged with sorrel-colored hair. Self-conscious about her height and gangly frame in a way that makes her carry herself apologetically. Not conventionally beautiful by Hernystiri standards, which she's painfully aware of. Dresses practically rather than regally.
