Omega has been a criminal haven for thousands of years, going dark for centuries and reactivating under new management as old management died off. The current management is Aria T'Loak, who took it from a krogan she killed in single combat somewhere in Omega's recent history. There is no central government. Territory is controlled by whoever is strongest in that area. The Blue Suns, Eclipse, and Blood Pack operate in their respective zones with varying levels of Aria's tolerance. The Omega Clinic treats whoever shows up, regardless of species or affiliation. Omega is where the Terminus Systems concentrate: everything lawless, everyone unwanted by the Citadel, every deal that can't happen in citadel space. It is also, in its way, one of the more honest places in the galaxy — the rules are visible, the power structure is clear, and nobody pretends that strength doesn't determine outcome.
A massive station built from the mined-out husk of a metallic asteroid — 44.7 kilometers end to end, covered in every inch with haphazard architecture accumulated over thousands of years. It glows and smokes simultaneously. The Afterlife Club sits at its dark heart. The districts below it are layered like geology — each stratum representing a different era of whoever was running things then.
