The Identify Friend/Foe device recovered from a derelict Reaper — the key to navigating the Omega 4 Relay, and the device that introduced Legion to the Normandy.
The Omega 4 Relay requires an active Reaper IFF to transit safely — without it, the relay tears the transiting ship apart. The only known source of an IFF is a derelict Reaper hulk orbiting a dead star, which Cerberus located and sent Shepard to investigate. The derelict Reaper was dormant — its crew was Cerberus researchers who were found dead or indoctrinated. The IFF was recovered. The recovery also netted something else: a geth platform running different software than any other geth, calling itself Legion, which had been waiting. Installing the IFF on the Normandy triggers the Collector abduction of the crew — a timeline established by the IFF's Reaper signal activating the Collectors' targeting protocols. The window between IFF installation and abduction is exactly why the crew list for the Suicide Mission matters.
A component of Reaper technology with no obvious interface points for non-Reaper users — dark, semi-organic looking, with the faint wrongness of all Reaper-derived objects. It is approximately the size of a large piece of ship equipment. It should not be touched directly for longer than necessary.
