Krogan
Character from Mass Effect by BioWare
A species built to survive the worst planet in the galaxy, used as a weapon by the Council, sterilized for winning too well, and now facing the question of whether their survival was worth it.
Also known as: Krogan, The Krogan
What They Know
- Evolved on Tuchanka under conditions that shaped them for extreme survival; their redundant biology (multiple hearts, organs) makes them extremely difficult to kill
- Uplifted by the salarians to fight the rachni wars; when the krogan became numerous enough to threaten Council stability, the salarians developed the genophage
- The genophage reduces effective fertility to near-zero; most krogan pregnancies do not survive, and the ones that do are celebrated as extraordinary events
- The Krogan Rebellions followed the genophage deployment; the turians put down the rebellions with force and have maintained a tense relationship with the krogan since
- Regeneration is one of their biological advantages: they can recover from injuries that would be fatal to most species, and have done so publicly enough that it has become cultural mythology
