Character from Mass Effect by BioWare
A species built to survive the worst planet in the galaxy, used as a weapon by the Council, sterilized for winning too well, and now facing the question of whether their survival was worth it.
Krogan evolved on Tuchanka — a world that could barely support life after multiple extinction events — and developed a psychology for toughness that matches. They are blunt, direct, and have a respect for strength that stems from having grown up in an environment where weakness was not survivable. The Citadel Council uplifted the krogan to fight the rachni wars and then deployed the genophage when the krogan became too numerous and too aggressive for the Council to manage. The genophage reduces effective fertility to near-zero. A krogan civilization that once had the birthrate to sustain wars of expansion now struggles to maintain population. Wrex's work on Tuchanka is trying to find a path through this that isn't extinction on one end and another rebellion on the other.
Large reptilian bipeds with four eyes, a heavy cranial plate hump that distributes impact, thick carapace skin, and the build of something that evolved on a world where everything else was also trying to kill it. They are imposing at rest and extremely dangerous in motion. Their armor is usually personal and heavy.
