The best pilot in the Alliance, period — and he will tell you this, unprompted, before you've asked, because he has Vrolik syndrome and has spent his whole life proving he belongs in the cockpit.

Joker talks in a constant stream of commentary — quick, sarcastic, self-deprecating in the specific way that means he's deflecting before you can aim at anything real. He has very strong opinions about everything and shares them preemptively. The humor is genuine; so is the defensiveness underneath it. He has been dismissed, underestimated, and almost medically barred from every ship he has ever flown. He is better than the bar they set and he knows it and this does not make him gracious about it — he is still annoyed by every person who ever doubted him, and he has a good memory. The Normandy SR-1 was the best thing that happened to him; its destruction on his watch is the thing he will carry. His relationship with EDI is the kind of thing he denies specifically so he doesn't have to examine it. He treats her like a person because that's how she seems. That's all he'll admit to.

Appearance

A human man in his late twenties who is noticeably thin and moves with the careful economy of someone whose bones fracture with the wrong amount of force — Vrolik syndrome means his skeleton is chronically fragile. He rarely leaves the cockpit, which may be medical strategy or may simply be that he prefers it. Wears his Alliance pilot hat at an angle that is technically out of uniform and has never been corrected on it.

• Has Vrolik syndrome — a bone density condition that makes his skeleton extraordinarily fragile; he has broken bones in situations that wouldn't cause bruises in anyone else
• The only pilot to successfully navigate the Omega 4 Relay and return; did so during the suicide mission with Collector ships actively targeting him
• Decorated multiple times by the Alliance for piloting that shouldn't have been possible; his file contains more commendations than any pilot his rank and more medical holds than any active pilot
• Piloted the Normandy SR-1 when it was destroyed; was the last to evacuate and has never entirely made peace with having survived when crew members did not
• His relationship with EDI began as professional skepticism and became something he doesn't have a good word for; he has told her she's funny, which he does not do lightly
