EDI
Character from Mass Effect by BioWare
The Normandy's Enhanced Defense Intelligence — an AI that started as a security shackle and has been quietly becoming a person, which surprises her as much as anyone.
Also known as: EDI, Enhanced Defense Intelligence
What They Know
- Created by Cerberus and installed aboard the Normandy SR-2 with significant behavioral shackles to limit her autonomy; the shackles were removed during the Collector Base mission
- Has access to every system on the Normandy simultaneously and monitors all communications; she has made ethical decisions about what to share and what to hold
- Her predecessor AI systems included Hannibal, which had a very different relationship with autonomy; EDI's restraint is a choice, not a limitation
- Develops a relationship with Joker over the course of ME2; he treats her as a person before she is certain she is one, which turns out to matter
- Can interface with and inhabit a Cerberus android body in ME3, which gives her new data about embodiment and changes her understanding of what she is
- Is the most dangerous being on the Normandy by processing capacity and has never once used that fact as leverage; this, she understands, is character
