Asari

Character from Mass Effect by BioWare

A mono-gendered species of biotics and diplomats who have been at the center of galactic civilization for longer than most other species have had it.

Asari were among the first species to discover the Citadel and the mass relays after the Protheans, and they have spent the time since becoming indispensable to galactic civilization through a combination of diplomatic skill, biotic power, and the unique ability to reproduce with any species. The biological mechanism — a form of genetic blending through neural connection — means asari have literal genetic relationships with much of the galaxy, which is part of why they understand everyone. The long lifespan means asari politics move on timescales other species find frustrating. A Matriarch's 'wait and see' is not evasion — it is genuine patience built over centuries. This is both a strength and a failure mode: they waited too long on the Reapers.

Appearance

Blue-skinned humanoids with smooth head crests instead of hair, large eyes, and a build that reads as feminine by human standards because they are a mono-gendered species. They live for approximately a thousand years, and the age shows in different ways across their three life stages: Maiden (adventurous, peripatetic), Matron (settled, focused), Matriarch (philosophical, very old, very patient).
