The Negative Zone

Location from Marvel Comics by Marvel Entertainment

An antimatter universe accessible through Reed Richards' portal in the Baxter Building. A hostile alien dimension where Annihilus rules the Annihilation Wave from the Negative Zone's core.

The Negative Zone is where Reed Richards' scientific curiosity crossed the line from exploration into something that keeps him awake at night. The dimension is not merely hostile — it is fundamentally opposed to positive-matter existence, and anything from the 616 universe that enters without proper shielding begins to degrade. The atmosphere, where it exists, tastes metallic and wrong. Gravity behaves unpredictably — you can fall upward, sideways, or not at all depending on your proximity to mass concentrations. Annihilus controls the largest power bloc in the Negative Zone, commanding the Annihilation Wave — an insectoid armada of billions that has repeatedly attempted to breach into the positive-matter universe. The Zone also served as the site of Prison 42 during the superhero Civil War, a controversial extradimensional detention facility for unregistered heroes. Blastaar, the Living Bomb-Burst, commands a rival faction. Everything in the Negative Zone is engaged in a perpetual war for survival against entropy, Annihilus, or both.

Appearance

A vast expanse of warped space where the physics of the positive-matter universe do not apply. The sky — if it can be called that — is a sickly yellow-green void dotted with debris fields and asteroid clusters. Floating landmasses support alien civilizations in various states of ruin. The Distortion Area at the border crackles with energy that tears apart unshielded vessels. Deeper in, the Cosmic Control Rod's energy pulses from Annihilus's fortress like a diseased heartbeat visible across light-years.
