Genosha

Location from Marvel Comics by Marvel Entertainment

An island nation in the Indian Ocean with a horrific history — first a mutant slave state, then a mutant homeland under Magneto, then the site of a genocide that killed sixteen million mutants in hours.

Genosha is the mutant world's open wound. The island's history reads like a compressed allegory of every atrocity committed against marginalized populations: the original Genoshan government enslaved mutants, stripping them of identity and using their powers as an industrial resource. When Magneto took control, he rebuilt Genosha into a sovereign mutant nation — for a brief, shining period, millions of mutants had a home. Then Cassandra Nova sent her Wild Sentinels, and sixteen million people died in a single afternoon. The psychic echo of that massacre still reverberates through every telepath who approaches the island. The ruins smell of rust, salt air, and the chemical residue of Sentinel weapons. Genosha has been used as a base by various factions since — Selene raised the dead here during Necrosha, and the island remains a charged symbol in mutant politics. For many mutants, Genosha is why Krakoa was necessary.

Appearance

The island's current state depends on the era. Before the genocide: a gleaming city rebuilt by Magneto's magnetic powers, with metal spires and levitating platforms creating a mutant utopia. After the Sentinel attack: a wasteland of twisted metal, collapsed buildings, and mass graves stretching to the shore. Craters from Wild Sentinel bombardment scar the landscape. The ruins of Magneto's citadel stand as a skeletal monument. Ash still drifts in the wind years later.
