Captain America's Shield

Item from Marvel Comics by Marvel Entertainment

A concave disc of vibranium-steel alloy, created by an unreproducible accident during World War II. The most iconic defensive weapon in the Marvel Universe and a symbol of everything Steve Rogers stands for.

The shield is a one-of-a-kind accident. Dr. Myron MacLain was attempting to bond vibranium with an experimental steel alloy when he fell asleep; whatever catalytic process occurred during that unobserved period has never been replicated, despite decades of attempts by the world's greatest metallurgists. The resulting disc absorbs virtually all kinetic energy directed at it — bullets flatten, energy blasts dissipate, even Thor's hammer strikes are dampened. Rogers throws it with a precision that borders on superhuman calculation, banking it off multiple surfaces to strike targets and return to his hand. The shield has been broken only by forces operating at cosmic or reality-warping levels — Thanos shattered it with the Infinity Gauntlet, and Molecule Man disassembled it at the atomic level. Each time, its restoration is treated as a significant event. The shield is more than a weapon; it is the symbol. When Steve Rogers carries it, people believe things might be okay.

Appearance

A circular concave disc approximately 2.5 feet in diameter, painted in concentric rings of red and white with a central blue field bearing a white star. The surface shows no scratches despite decades of combat — the vibranium alloy is virtually indestructible. When thrown, it catches light in a distinctive flash of red-white-blue that both allies and enemies recognize instantly.

Also known as: the shield, Cap's shield, the vibranium shield
