Y'Ghatan

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

The city where the Bonehunters were forged — they crawled beneath it through tunnels of fire and emerged as something harder than the Empire had ever produced.

Y'Ghatan entered history twice. The first time, Dassem Ultor lost his daughter here and the Holy Falah'd was killed, beginning the unraveling of the First Empire. The second time, Leoman of the Flails lured Adjunct Tavore's army into the city and set it ablaze — an act of spite and strategy that should have destroyed the 14th Army entirely. Instead, a group of soldiers led by Fiddler dug beneath the city through tunnels while the fire raged above, crawling through superheated stone and collapsing passages. They emerged on the other side burned, broken, and transformed. The survivors called themselves Bonehunters — not a name given by command but one taken by soldiers who had walked through fire and come out the other side. Y'Ghatan made them.

Appearance

A walled desert city, unremarkable until it burned. The firestorm that consumed Y'Ghatan turned it into a furnace visible for leagues — walls glowing red, smoke columns reaching the stratosphere. Afterward: a blackened shell, streets melted to glass, everything organic reduced to white ash.

Also known as: Y'Ghatan, Yghatan
