The Shore

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

The edge where Kurald Emurlahn meets oblivion — where the Shake held the line against the forces of Darkness in a battle at the boundary of existence itself.

The Shore exists at the boundary of Kurald Emurlahn, the shattered warren of Shadow. It is less a location than a threshold — the place where the fabric of reality frays into nothing. The Shake — an ancient people bound by blood to the Shore — held this line against the forces pouring through from the other side, fighting a war at the edge of existence that most of the world never knew was happening. The battle at the Shore was one of the convergences of the Crippled God arc's endgame, fought simultaneously with the Bonehunters' march on Kolanse and the siege of Lightfall.

Appearance

A featureless strand extending into darkness — black sand meeting black water under a sky without stars. The boundary between reality and the void is visible here as a literal shoreline. The waves are not water but something else — shadow given liquid form, lapping at the edge of what exists.
