The Azath House in Darujhistan

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

The Azath House growing in Darujhistan's grounds — where the Jaghut tyrant Raest is imprisoned beneath roots that tighten with each passing century.

This Azath House grew to contain Raest — a Jaghut tyrant of immense power who was unleashed upon Darujhistan when the Finnest (his soul container) was brought into the city. The house manifested, imprisoned him, and has held him ever since, its roots serving as living chains that tighten over centuries. The house also serves as a locus of power within Darujhistan, contributing to the city's tendency to attract convergences. Its garden holds other prisoners besides Raest — beings sealed away so long ago that no one remembers what they are or why they were dangerous. The house endures, patient and purposeful, another layer in a city built on layers.

Appearance

A squat, ancient structure surrounded by a garden where the roots move. The garden is overgrown with vegetation that seems wrong — too dark, too purposeful, reaching toward buried things with vegetable intent. At the garden's center, a mound marks where Raest lies imprisoned, the roots wrapped so tightly around his form that bark has grown over the chains. Passersby cross the street to avoid walking too close.
